In order to be able to talk about sustainability and how our business practices support the Sustainability movement, we must first take a moment to answer the question What is Sustainability? According to the EPA, “Sustainability is based on a simple principle: Everything that we need for our survival and well-being depends, either directly or indirectly, on our natural environment. To pursue sustainability is to create and maintain the conditions under which humans and nature can exist in productive harmony to support present and future generations.” (https://www.epa.gov/sustainability/learn-about-sustainability#what)

TRT believes that the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) provide a vehicle for people from every corner of the world to join together in meaningful efforts to improve the quality of life for all. TRT has given its support to the UN for the SDGs and is actively working on projects that directly support many of the SDG focus matrices.
- No Poverty and Zero Hunger -- Twin Rivers supports local charity Father Bills, whose mission is to end and prevent homelessness in Southern Massachusetts with programs that provide emergency and permanent housing and help people obtain skills, jobs, housing, and services
- Clean Water and Sanitation -- TRT has four programs directly related to this particular SDG. Wastewater pretreatment, water reuse, recycling and waste reduction. The process of wastewater pretreatment involves removing harmful pollutants before they are discharged to a sewer system under the control of a publicly owned treatment works. In 2019, TRT implemented a more robust recycling program at our Quincy, MA facility. Our main goal is to maximize what we’re recycling and to reduce what we’re throwing away as trash throughout our plant and offices.
- Industry, Innovation and Infrastructure -- By implementing programs such as water reuse and a combined heat and power system, TRT's electric production occurs by utilizing the onsite combined heat and power (CHP) plant that was installed in 2014 and came online in 2015.
We will continue to work to improve our support and local and global involvement in these SDGs as we actively work to implement more into our business model.
