Food Safety Modernization Act Facts:
- FSMA is a Food and Drug Administration (FDA) regulation
- Published in September 17, 2015
- Applies to all businesses that sell food consumable products in the US
- Small Business (< 500 employees) had until September 17, 2017 to comply with FSMA
What does FSMA involve? FSMA = FSP + GMP + FSVP
- FSP = Food Safety Plan
- GMP = Good Manufacturing Practice
- FSVP = Foreign Supplier Verification Program
FSMA = FSP + GMP + FSVP
FSP consists of a Hazard Analysis and Critical Control Point Plan (HACCP) with:
- Critical Limits: (max/min values to which biological, chemical or physical parameters are controlled to prevent, eliminate or reduce the occurrence of a food safety hazard to an acceptable level)
- Monitoring Procedures
- Corrective Action Plan
- Verification
- Validation
FSMA = FSP + GMP + FSVP
Comply with Good Manufacturing Practice (GMP) as outlined in 21 CFR 117, Subpart B.
The basis for determining whether food products have been processed under sanitary conditions and includes:
- Personnel
- Plant & Grounds
- Sanitary Operations
- Sanitary facilities & controls
- Equipment & utensils
- Process & controls
- Warehouse & distribution
- Holding & distribution of human food by-products for use as animal food
- Defect action levels
FSMA = FSP + GMP + FSVP
Comply with the FDA FSMA rule on Foreign Supplier Verification Program (FSVP) for Importers of Food for Humans and Animals.
- Verify that TRT’s foreign suppliers are producing raw materials in a manner that provides the same level of public health protection as the preventive controls to ensure that the supplier’s raw materials are not adulterated and are not mis-branded with respect to allergen labeling.
- Perform certain risk-based activities to verify that raw materials imported into the United States have been produced in a manner that meets applicable U.S. safety standards.
