Glycerin and Hand Sanitizer... What Do They Have in Common?

Posted by Danielle Wentworth on May 11, 2020 10:04:00 AM

Demand for glycerin has boomed amid supply chain uncertainty due to Covid-19.  According to the April 22, 2020 Independent Commodity Intelligence Services (I.C.I.S.) Glycerin report,

"US spot refined prices maintained upward momentum, amid continued supply chain uncertainty and tight spot availability.  US production from large and integrated producers largely remains intact under the
federal mandate amid low feedstock costs and sustained demand from the trucking sector.  While oleochemical production is improving in southeast Asia, coronavirus-related shipping and logistics constraints persist. Local coronavirus-related constraints are adding to that pressure. Demand is strong across most end segments besides polyurethanes, especially for hand sanitizers to support coronavirus relief efforts" (Hall).

The report went on to say that "Contracts negotiated in March faced major increases amid severe disruptions to the supply chain, both domestically and across south and southeast Asia, alongside increased raw materials demand for the cleaning industry during the coronavirus outbreak."

It is believed that part of the demand increase is due to the fact that glycerin makes up 2-3% of the formulation of hand sanitizer.  While the percentage is low, the basic principles of  supply and demand tells us that those numbers have grown exponentially over the past few months.
